Does This Sound Like You?"Hi, I'm Peter Chirico with Chirico Physical Therapy and Wellness. Today we're going to go over what's the best therapy for neck pain. This is essentially if you're struggling with neck pain or you've had recurring episodes of it or failed previous treatment approaches. The most important thing to understand with this is that we need to find the root cause of the pain or the problem, to not chase the effect but chase the cause. A good analogy of this is if there's a fire in your house and fire alarm goes off, the first thing we do is get up and go room to room looking for the fire or the cause, what caused the alarm to go off, find out where it is and what caused it. Later on we'll go back and shut off the fire alarm. Well, the body's the same way. When we feel pain, that's our fire alarm. It's telling us that something's wrong, but it's not telling us where it is or what's causing it, so it's up to us to solve that problem because if we can solve that problem and treat that, then the pain will resolve and go away and not come back. Hi. Now we're going to go over the different kinds of neck pain. The first one is strain or a muscular problem. These can last anywhere from three or four weeks to five or six weeks usually. The next one is a strain or a ligamentous problem and these usually take longer to heal, anywhere from a month to three or four months. After that, you've got things like whiplash usually that's traumatization of the nerves usually from an accident or injury. Those can take a long time to heal, especially depending on how they're treated. After that, you've got degenerative conditions like degenerative discs disease which is just a degeneration of the disc between the vertebra. Then there's degenerative joint disease. You've got bulging disc which can bulge and touch on a nerve or cause other tissue to press on a nerve. Then you've got herniated disc, which is where the wall of the disc has been ruptured and fluid is leaking out. It's like an acid that can eat away at the area around it, cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Then there's other conditions like stenosis which is narrowing of the spinal canal. There's thoracic outlet syndrome, which we've seen before. That's particularly difficult. It can masquerade as a neck problem or a shoulder problem. It has to do with a neurovascular bundle below the clavicle on the first and second rib, but we've seen that before and we've had very good results with it as we do with neck problems as well. After that, you've got cervical radiculopathies which are radiating pain down the arm into the hand and finger areas and it could be numbness as well. Other conditions that can radiate pain to the neck area are shoulder conditions, temporal mandibula joint problems, headaches, so there are quite a few different conditions that can cause neck pain. If you're suffering from neck pain, the first thing is to solve the root cause. As you can see, there are many different types and causes of neck pain. So, based on the specific type of neck pain that you have, we design a treatment program, the best treatment or best therapy for your specific type of neck pain, because not all neck pain is alike. The problem is today, a lot of people go in to a standard clinic and get standard care where they've traced the effect and not the cause, and then their pain reoccurs and keeps coming back.
