Shoulder Pain Workshop

Hi, this is Peter from Chirico Physical Therapy and Wellness and today we're going to do a free online workshop for the shoulder. So we're going to go over three things that you can do at home that are very simple to do and that can help you. So if you're a person who has gotten back to their activities or sports and have noticed that you're having difficulty with one of your shoulders or both, hopefully not, but this can help you because shoulder problems tend to be problems that snowball. They'll start off as a little ache, and before you know, it's more constant, it's more intense so we tend to see that a lot with patients.

So the first thing we want to go over that can help you is there are some things that you can avoid that will help you. And the first thing is reaching behind your back with your hands behind your head like this. Whether you're sitting, standing, or lying down, this is not good for the shoulder. It puts stress on it and it's going to aggravate whatever's going on in there. So that's the first thing. The second thing is, along similar lines, you should avoid lying on your side, whether it's in bed or on the floor, and putting your hand against your head and kind of resting the elbow down on the floor. That will also aggravate it. The third thing that you can do is avoid lying on the involved side. So if you're having trouble with your left shoulder, you should avoid lying on your left side when you sleep. I know it's difficult to change positions if you're used to sleeping on that side, but it will make a difference.

So these things can help your shoulder, but they're not intended as a cure. They are not intended either as a replacement for professional advice and treatment.
